Russian River: Pliny the Elder

Russian River Brewing Company logo
Today we are traveling back out to California to the good ole Russian River Brewing Company located in Santa Rosa to take a look at Pliny the Younger's dad, Pliny the Elder.
Pliny the Elder beer with beer glass In 79 A.D. Mt. Vesuvius erupted in Naples Italy and while Pliny the Elder was attempting to save fellow civilians, he was succumbed to ash and smoke.  The reason we have this record is because Pliny the Elders nephew wrote about it thousands of years ago.  With great history comes great inspiration for an amazing beer.  Pliny the Elder is a beautifully balanced double IPA beer with fresh malt and hops.  The aroma is of fresh pine, citrus, mango, and floral.  As you pour the beer the color is of yellow straw and has a good size head that dies down pretty fast.  The taste is hoppy grapefruit, lemon grass, pale malt and slight honey.  The mouthful is very light and the bitterness sits in the back of your mouth for the time being.  Pliny the Elder is 8%ABV and has been rated pretty high on the best beers of 2012 on RateBeer.com.  Pliny the Elder is unique in that the Russian River Brewing Company only brews a few batches at a time.  Pliny the elder  is best enjoyed fresh and each bottle has a bottling date on it.  California has many great beers and Pliny the Elder is definitely one of them.  So next time you are out in Santa Rosa, Ca stop by Russian River Brewing company and grab a taste of history.
