NordEast Grain Belt Beer: New Ulm, MN

Grain Belt Beer Sign in Minnesota
Grain Belt Beer LogoNew Ulm, Minnesota is home to a hidden brewery called August Schell Brewing Company which brews a brand of beer called Grain Belt.  Grain Belt beer has three versions: Grain Belt Golden (introduced in 1893), Grain Belt Premium (introduced in 1947), and the brand new Grain Belt Nordeast which was introduced to the northeast of Minneapolis on April 7, 2010.  Grain Belt beer was originally brewed by the Minneapolis Brewing Company which was formed by 4 smaller breweries in 1891 and soon after Grain Belt beer became the companies number one product.  The name "Nordeast" refers from the Northern and Eastern immigrants and their language which helped shape the Northeast of Minneapolis.  "Grain Belt" is a term from the American Midwest where the majority of the worlds grain, wheat, and barley hails from.  Nordeast Grain belt beer is a American Amber/ Red lager that contains 4.7% alcohol.
Grain Belt Nordeast Beer bottle
Grain Belt Nordeast 12 pack of beer The Nordeast Grain Belt beer is a clear "burnt" orange color and has a relatively small head that dissipates down to a light ring around the glass with no lacing.  The smell is of a caramel apple, with nice grain and a little bit of hoppyness.  The taste is where it grabs you, clean, malty, and hoppy!  There is an astounding caramel maltiness to Nordeast beer and the beer has a nice mix of fruitiness as well with the finish rather bitter.  The Nordeast Grain Belt beer is a very smooth and is a "easy to drink" beer.  Sadly, Nordeast Grain Belt beer is almost impossible to find outside of Minnesota so you would have to drive to the state to purchase it, but it would make a great road trip!  Next time you are in Minnesota hunt down the nearest market or pub and grab a Nordeast Grain Belt Beer.

Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest

Sierra Nevada is a well known brewing company around the United States.  Sierra Nevada Brewing Company was founded in 1979 and is located in Chico, California.  Home Brewers, Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi are the masterminds behind the production and foundation of the brewery and have brought Sierra Nevada up as one of the top craft breweries in the United States.  Sierra Nevada Brewing is currently the sixth largest brewing company in the United States and in 2010 produced 786,000 barrels of beer.  The Companies name comes from Ken Grossman's love of hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  Sierra Nevada offers a wide variety of craft beers from Seasonal Pilsner's to year round Classics.  I picked Sierra nevada southern hemisphere harvest for two reasons.  One, because my friend Jake turned me on to Southern Hemisphere and two, because it is a a great Indian Pale Ale.  Southern hemisphere harvest has a 6.7% alcohol content and contains fresh picked hops from the southern hemisphere.  The ale contains fresh pacific Hallertau, New Zealand Motueka and New Southern Cross hops that are all imported from New Zealand.
The hops are dried out right after they are picked and then shipped across the world to the brewery to start the brewing process. When poured, hemisphere harvest has a nice, rich, dark, orange color with a very light head.  You inhale the fresh grassy hops, with floral aromas coming from all angles, like you are in a rose garden. Southern Hemisphere is gorgeously balanced with a solid hoppy flavor that hangs around for a while after you are done drinking.  With a medium body and carbonation you get the perfect mix of hops and malt taste through out this IPA craft beer.  Sierra nevada southern hemisphere harvest is available year round and is one of the beers from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company that you need to go out and try.  Especially while hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in desperate need for a hydration drink.  Thank you Jake Ripley for informing Beers of the Day about Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere Harvest.

Kona Pipeline Porter: Kailua, Hawaii

Today we are surfing over to the big island of Kailua to get a taste of Kona Pipeline brewed by Kona Brewing Company.  Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa founded Kona Brewing Company in the spring of 1994.
The father and son introduced the Pacific Golden Ale and Fire Rock Pale ALe to Hawaii in 1995 and then followed up with the Longboard Island Lager in 1998.  The company founded Kona Brewing Company's Kailua-Kona Pub and the company started growing immenstly.  Kona Brewing Company currently brews six different craft bottle beers and has six draft beers you can find around the country.  Kona Pipeline Porter is one of those six bottle beers.  The Pipeline Porter is a 5.4% ABV American Porter and is seasonal, available in the Fall and Winter.  The Pipeline Porter is poured with a dark, murky, chocolate/coca-cola color.  Having a loosely thin head the porter leaves airborne lace around the glass.
You can smell the lightly sweet 100% Kona coffee, with chocolate malt, and lots of earthy flavors.  The taste is a sweet caramel malt with the beautiful coffee ground feeling in every sip. The carbonation is very mild and light for the style and Pipeline finishes with a malty, nutty, slightly warm feeling that is perfect for the season.  Like I mentioned before, Kona Brewing Company also creates their own coffee that is grown at the Cornwell Estate on the big island.  Kona Pipeline Porter does an amazing job bringing together all the earthy aspects and culture of the Hawaiian islands in every product they produce.  So next time there is a flat day of surfing in Hawaii (which rarely ever happens) go and pop a squat in the sand and grab yourself a beautiful Kona Pipeline Porter!

Sam Adams Utopias

Sam Adams is a beer brand that is known across the world.  The original recipe for the Samuel Adams Boston Lager was developed in 1860 in St. Louis Missouri by Louis Koch.  Through the years the Sam Adams brewing was kept in the family all the way
down to Jim Koch, the fifth generation son.
In 1984 he brewed his first batch of Sam Adams in his kitchen with the original recipe.  Jim Koch graduated from Harvard and he left his career at Boston Consulting group and founded Samuel Adams Beer.  In April 1985 Jim re-introduced the Samuel Adams Boston Lager and in three months was rated "Best Beer in America".  From then on the brewing was set on light speed mode and the brewery took off.  Sam Adams has beers brewed year round, four season beers, and then Sam Adams Utopias. I never even knew something like this even existed in the world. Utopias was started in 2002 and is one of the strongest naturally fermented commercial beers in the world at a 27% ABV.  Utopias is brewed with caramel, Vienna, Bavarian, and Moravian smoked malts along with four hops.  This beer sits and marinates in scotch, cognac, and port barrels for a year!  In the 2009 batch release some of the blends have been ageing up to 16 years in the barrel room.
This beer pours a gorgeous copper plum brown hue leaving behind long, big, sticky legs as you swirl the glass around.  The smell is of the heavens with vanilla, dark fruit, oak, and earthy
notes.  The taste is something in another universe, with vanilla running out of the glass into your mouth.  The dark fruits join in after the vanilla, with sweetness, brown sugar, and molasses.  The brandy alcohol is in the finish with a little burn, wood, and oak.  Sam Adams Utopias is a beer that is unlike anything in the world.  Sam Adams Utopias comes in a amazing ceramic bottle and only a limited amount are released every two years.  With a great, unique beer comes a great price.  Sam Adams Utopias is valued at a price of 150$ a pop, which is pretty pricey but at the same time one glass of this stuff will probably send you to bed.  This surely is a one of a kind beer and is definitely a "must drink" before you die kind of drink.

Budeweiser: The American Lager

Happy Independence Day to the United States of America and you better believe that Budweiser American Lager is The Beer of the Day!  I know that everyone in America knows Budweiser and how special the beer is to everyone who lives in the United States, if you havnt heard of Budweiser then you are about to get a little history lesson.  Budweiser is a 4.8%ABV American Style-Lager produced by Anheuser-Busch.  In 1876 the beautiful company of Anheuser-Busch was founded by Adolphus Busch and is litteraly the biggest brewing franchise in the world.
Adolphus Busch left Germany and settled in the United States in 1857.  After traveling for a while around Europe studying all the latest brewing techniques of the time he came back.  During the time most people enjoyed beers that were dark beers and very heavy.  Not Adolphus, he was infatuated with light Bohemian Lagers.  So that is exactly what Adolphus started brewing.  The first Anheuser Brewery was opened in St. Louis and is a National Historic Landmark. Internationally Anheuser-Busch has 15 breweries, 14 in China and one in the United Kingdom and brews a wide variety of beers.
Budweiser is made up of 30% rice, barley malt, fresh hops, and is quit easily the highest selling beer in America, especially on the fourth of July.       You can find Budweiser in many different bottled and canned forms with the taste of Freedom that everyone enjoys.  The pictures to the left are a couple of vintage photos I found that were taken in the late 1800's to early 1900's.  We have progressed a lot since then, from horses and buggies to 18 wheeler trucks.   Budweiser has so much history and meaning to it no wonder it is The American Lager.  So get out there and grab yourself some Independence in a bottle!  Happy Freedom day everybody!
